The Premise

The land is groaning

The people are groaning

We groan

This modern dance film explores the tension that is clear among all humanity that the people and the earth is marred and not as it should be. And we know it. Like a woman in labor, we sit in anguish hoping for something better to come soon and provide relief. But for now, we wait and groan in pain.

The film is comprised of choreographed modern dancers who are found in dancing and roaming within 3 locations. The dances performed exude a melancholiac longing and anguish. The dancers interact with the ground, walls, lamp post  – whatever is around them. As if, their sad dance partners are the place itself.

The accompanying score will juxtapose an eerie, esoteric tune that incorporates a gamut of lyrics from Woody Gutherie's "This Land Is Your Land." Special emphasis will be made on an unpublished verse from Gutherie that gives us a glimpse into the wrestling taking place in his mind amidst writing this patriotic classic.

Music Composition

This land is your land, this land is my land

I roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
And all around me , a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me
The voice was chanting as the fog was lifting

This land was made for you and me

(Unpublished verse)
In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
Is this land made for you and me
